Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him because he knows my name.
Psalm 91:14 (NIV)
Devotion
How do you view a fence? Is it there to pen you in, or is it a hedge of protection? You may feel that it restricts you from doing what you desire. Perhaps it’s a wall you can’t penetrate. Fences aren’t pretty and we wish they weren’t necessary, but often they protect us like God’s Word shelters us from harm.
We happen upon a church on a high bank of a river one crisp fall day while visiting family. Various hues of olive green, golden, and orange leaves from trees along the shore, weave magic as their branches intertwine. The surrounding area is bursting with the Creators' spectacular display of exciting magnificence.
Within view, below the foliage is a river as smooth as glass. The soft waters in peaceful stillness reflect the stunning sight. The vegetation and waterway are the backdrops to three crosses. They stand apart, in quietness and solitude, from all other structures on the grounds. It is the perfect place to wait in expectancy and wonder for His presence.
While pondering the majesty of God, I silently wish the chain-link barrier was not visible in the photo. I contemplate the purpose for it being near. Stepping closer, I discover it provides a valuable element in life and brings significance to the picture. The church erected the barrier for the safety of its people. Behind the fence is a steep embankment to the water. The cliff is dangerously near the crosses.
Often, people are unaware of the dangers that exist in the world. Our heavenly Father, who loves us dearly, shelters us from harm. His Word is not an annoyance but a blessing that acts as a fence to protect and keep us safe in dangerous situations. Others may consider the Bible as not relevant because they don't understand why God forbids certain things. However, God desires to save us from unimaginable consequences. When evil intensifies, we draw closer to Christ. We walk in confidence and peace with God.
